Creative Writing Prizes

Departmental Prizes for UVA undegraduate and graduate students

Each spring semester, the English Department awards these creative writing prizes to UVA undergraduates and graduates:

  • The Hannah Kahn Poetry Prize: $100 for the best poem by a fourth-year English major
  • The Wagenheim Fiction Prize: $500 for the best short story by an undergraduate English major
  • The Rachel St. Paul Poetry Prize: $500 for the best group of poems by any UVA undergraduate
  • The Academy of American Poets Prize: $300 for the best poem or group of poems by a graduate student in English
  • The Balch Prize in Fiction: $500 for the best short story from a graduate student in English

The Creative Writing Program also conducts a Henfield Prize Competition for its MFA Students

Submission deadlines (which are usually early March) and formatting requirements vary for each prize. Look for informational e-mails each spring for full details.

$300.00 for the best poem or group of poems by a graduate student in English

$1000.00 for the best essay by a student in the first year of graduate work

Ann Marie Thompson, “Modeling ‘Magnetic Sympathy’: Whitman’s War Sketches in Specimen Days”

THOMAS J. GRIFFIS PRIZES FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS IN ENGLISH

$1,500.00 for the best essay by a student beyond the first year (Maximum for essays 9,000 words)
