Kathryn Scanlan

Rea Visiting Writer, Fall 2025

Kathryn Scanlan visited the University of Virginia as a Rea Visiting Writer in Fall 2025. One of the most distinctive voices in contemporary American fiction, Scanlan is known for her compressed, formally inventive prose and her ability to reveal extraordinary depth within the details of ordinary experience.

Scanlan is the author of the acclaimed novel Kick the Latch, a work inspired by the life of a veteran horse trainer and widely praised for its spare style, emotional resonance, and innovative approach to narrative. She is also the author of Aug 9 - Fog, The Dominant Animal, and Youth. Her fiction and short prose have earned recognition for their precision, intensity, and close attention to the rhythms of working lives, memory, and place.

Drawing on techniques of fragmentation, compression, and documentary observation, Scanlan's work challenges conventional narrative forms while remaining deeply humane and accessible. Critics have noted her remarkable ability to evoke entire worlds in a few carefully chosen sentences, creating fiction that is both minimalist and richly textured.

As a Rea Visiting Writer, Scanlan brought students and readers into conversation with questions of literary form, voice, and the possibilities of brevity, demonstrating how attentive language and sharp observation can transform everyday experience into compelling art.
